The longest word in the major English dictionaries began as a puzzler's stunt. Everett M. Smith, president of the National Puzzlers' League, coined pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, a lung disease from breathing fine volcanic dust, for the league's meeting in 1935. At 45 letters it would not fit in any grid here; about half the words in these lists run to eight letters or more.
