Accounting Word Search
This accounting word search holds the vocabulary of the books: the ledger and the journal, debit and credit, each asset and liability, the balance sheet and income statement, and depreciation and inventory.
Modern accounting runs on double entry: every amount is written down twice, once as a debit and once as a credit, so the two sides must always match. Merchants in Italian cities were doing it by the 1300s, and in 1494 a Franciscan friar and mathematician named Luca Pacioli printed the first full description of the method in a math book published in Venice. He is often called the father of accounting.
The equation behind every balance sheet is short: assets equal liabilities plus equity. Debit comes from the Latin debere, to owe, and credit from credere, to believe, because a lender believed you would pay. The fiscal year does not have to follow the calendar; the United States government's begins on October 1.
