Economics Word Search

This economics word search holds the vocabulary of an economics unit: supply and demand, scarcity and opportunity cost, goods and services, inflation and recession, and two big names, Adam Smith and Keynes.

Economics starts from scarcity: there is never enough of everything for everyone, so every choice gives something up, and the next best thing you give up is the opportunity cost. Smith's The Wealth of Nations, published in 1776, opens with a pin factory where ten workers, each doing one step, made upward of 48,000 pins a day, when one worker alone might not make twenty. That is specialization.

The invisible hand, the idea that people chasing their own gain can end up serving everyone, appears only once in that whole book. John Maynard Keynes answered a different problem. Writing in 1936, during the Great Depression, he argued that when people and businesses stop spending, governments should spend more to fill the gap, the idea behind every modern stimulus.
