This nervous system word search has forty words for the brain and nerves unit: the neuron with its axon and dendrite, the synapse, myelin, the spinal cord, cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem, and the reflex that skips the brain.

The brain and the spinal cord make up the central nervous system, and every other nerve belongs to the peripheral system. The human brain holds about 86 billion neurons. A signal runs down the axon as an electrical impulse, faster where the axon is wrapped in fatty myelin, and at the synapse it crosses a tiny gap as a chemical, such as dopamine or serotonin. Touch a hot pan and a reflex pulls your hand back through the spinal cord before the brain has registered the pain.

Each part of the brain has its own work. The cerebrum, split into two hemispheres joined by the corpus callosum, handles thinking, speech and movement, and the left half controls the right side of the body. The cerebellum keeps your balance and coordination, and the medulla in the brainstem runs breathing and heartbeat. The vagus nerve, from the Latin for wandering, travels from the brainstem all the way down to the gut, and the sciatic nerve is the longest in the body.
