Africa has 54 countries recognized by the United Nations, more than any other continent. Algeria is the largest by area, a place it took in 2011 when Sudan split in two. Nigeria has the most people, more than 200 million, and its city of Lagos is among the biggest on the continent. The smallest country is the Seychelles, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean.
By 1914 almost all of Africa was ruled by European powers. Ethiopia held them off, defeating Italy at the Battle of Adwa in 1896, and Liberia, founded by freed Black Americans in the 1820s, declared independence in 1847. Ghana won its independence from Britain in 1957, one of the first colonies south of the Sahara to do so, and about thirty countries followed within ten years. Lesotho has the highest low point of any country: no part of it lies below about 1,400 meters.
