This endocrine system word search has forty words about glands and hormones: the pituitary, hypothalamus and thyroid, the adrenal glands and the pancreas, insulin and glucagon, melatonin from the pineal, and cortisol for stress.
Endocrine glands have no ducts. They release hormones straight into the blood, and each hormone acts only on target cells that carry a matching receptor. The pituitary, about the size of a pea at the base of the brain, is often called the master gland because it sets the pace for the thyroid, the adrenals and the ovaries or testes, but it takes its own orders from the hypothalamus just above it. Most hormones work by negative feedback, like a thermostat that shuts off the furnace once the room is warm.
The thyroid needs iodine to make thyroxine, and too little iodine makes the gland swell into a goiter, which is why salt sold in the United States has had iodine added since 1924. In the pancreas, small clusters of cells called islets make insulin to lower blood sugar and glucagon to raise it. Frederick Banting and Charles Best isolated insulin in Toronto in 1921, and a 14-year-old boy with diabetes became the first patient treated with it in January 1922.
