Sociology Word Search

This sociology word search holds forty words from the study of how people live in groups: society and socialization, status, role and class, the institution and the bureaucracy, and the founders Durkheim, Weber and Du Bois.

The French thinker Auguste Comte coined the word sociology in 1838, but the subject became a working science with Emile Durkheim. His 1897 book Suicide used government statistics to show that even the most private act follows social patterns, with rates that differed by religion, marriage and country. Max Weber, writing in Germany at the same time, studied how bureaucracy runs modern life through written rules and offices.

In the United States, W. E. B. Du Bois went door to door in Philadelphia's Seventh Ward for The Philadelphia Negro in 1899, one of the first American studies built on a careful community survey. Later researchers studied conformity. In Solomon Asch's experiments of the 1950s, students judged the length of lines after hearing a group of actors give the wrong answer, and about a third of the time they went along with the group.
