This atmosphere word search climbs through the five layers of air, the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere, with the gases that make it up, nitrogen, oxygen and argon, and the ozone layer, the aurora and the jet stream.

Dry air is about 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and just under one percent argon, with carbon dioxide at about four hundredths of one percent. The air gets thin fast: half of all of it lies below about 18,000 feet. In the troposphere the temperature drops as you climb, but in the stratosphere it rises again, because the ozone there soaks up ultraviolet light from the Sun.

Meteors burn up in the mesosphere, and the aurora glows in the thermosphere, where the International Space Station also orbits, about 250 miles up. The Karman line at 100 kilometers, named for the engineer Theodore von Karman, is the usual boundary where space begins. The sky is blue because molecules of air scatter blue sunlight much more than red, and the same effect turns sunsets orange when the light passes through more air.
