William Shakespeare was baptized in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1564. At eighteen he married Anne Hathaway, who was twenty-six, and they had three children: Susanna and the twins Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet died in 1596 at the age of eleven. By then his father was an actor and writer in London with the Lord Chamberlain's Men, the company that became the King's Men when James I took the throne in 1603.

The company built the Globe in 1599 from the timbers of an older playhouse, carried across the Thames to Southwark. It burned down in 1613 when a stage cannon set the thatched roof alight during a play about Henry VIII. Shakespeare died in 1616. Seven years later two fellow actors, John Heminges and Henry Condell, printed thirty-six of his plays in the First Folio; about half had never been printed before, Macbeth and The Tempest among them.
