Forensic Science Word Search
This forensic science word search has 40 words from the crime lab: the fingerprint and its three patterns, the whorl, the loop and the arch, along with DNA, blood spatter, ballistics and toxicology, and the people who use them, from the coroner to the detective.
Edmond Locard opened one of the first police laboratories in Lyon, France, in 1910. His rule, now called Locard's exchange principle, is that every contact leaves a trace: a criminal takes something from the scene and leaves something behind, a hair, a fiber, a smear of soil. Fingerprints were shown to be unique and permanent by Francis Galton in his 1892 book, and Scotland Yard adopted Edward Henry's system for filing them in 1901.
DNA profiling was invented by Alec Jeffreys at the University of Leicester in 1984, and within a few years it was solving cases and freeing people who had been wrongly accused. Other branches answer narrower questions. Luminol glows blue when it touches the iron in blood, so it shows stains that someone tried to wash away. Forensic odontology matches teeth to dental records, and forensic entomology estimates the time of death from the age of the insects found on a body.
