Literary Terms Word Search
This literary terms word search gathers the words of a story unit: plot, setting, conflict, climax, protagonist, antagonist, foreshadowing and irony, plus parts of a play like the soliloquy and the epilogue.
The shape most classes draw for a plot comes from Gustav Freytag, a German novelist who in 1863 drew the five acts of a tragedy as a pyramid. Teachers now label its parts exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. The last is also called the denouement, French for an untying, because the knots of the story come loose at the end.
A foil is a character who makes another stand out by contrast, the way Laertes, who rushes to avenge his father, makes Hamlet's delay look longer. The term comes from jewelers, who set a thin leaf of metal behind a gem to make it shine. Hamlet also gives the best known soliloquy in English, To be or not to be, spoken alone so the audience hears what no other character does.
