Forty of the fifty state capitals are hidden here: Juneau and Honolulu, Boston and Atlanta, Austin, Denver, Sacramento, Baton Rouge, Salt Lake City and Montpelier, from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific islands.
A capital is often not the biggest city in its state. Springfield is the seat of Illinois, not Chicago, and Albany governs New York. Tallahassee was picked in 1824 because it sat halfway between St. Augustine and Pensacola, the two largest towns in Florida at the time. Phoenix is the most populous state capital, and Montpelier, Vermont, with fewer than 9,000 people, is the smallest.
Juneau has no road link to the rest of North America; people and cars arrive by plane or ferry. Santa Fe, founded by the Spanish around 1610, is the oldest capital city in the United States and, at about 7,000 feet, the highest. Honolulu holds Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on American soil, where the kings and queens of Hawaii ruled until 1893.
