Earth Science Word Searches

Puzzles for the study of the planet itself, starting with a general Earth Science list. Below the surface are the Layers of the Earth, Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Rocks and Minerals, Fossils and the Geologic Time Scale. On the surface are Landforms, Weathering and Erosion and Soil, and around it the Water Cycle, the Atmosphere, the Weather, the Ocean and the Rainforest, with Natural Disasters, Natural Resources and the Environment for the units where people come in.

A geologist reads rock the way a historian reads old letters. Layers laid down one on top of another put the oldest at the bottom, a rule the Danish scientist Nicolas Steno set out in 1669, and the fossils in each layer let it be matched to layers in other places. That is how the geologic time scale was put together, long before anyone could measure the age of a rock in years.
