Photosynthesis Word Search
Here are forty photosynthesis words: the chlorophyll that catches light, the stomata that let in carbon dioxide, the thylakoid and stroma inside each chloroplast, the Calvin cycle, and the glucose and oxygen that come out.
The whole process fits in one line: six molecules of carbon dioxide and six of water, powered by light, make one molecule of glucose and six of oxygen. The light reactions happen in the thylakoid membranes and split water, which is where the oxygen comes from. The Calvin cycle then runs in the stroma and builds sugar from carbon dioxide, using an enzyme called rubisco that is probably the most common protein on earth.
Joseph Priestley found the first clue in 1771, when a sprig of mint in a sealed jar restored air that a burning candle had used up. In 1779 Jan Ingenhousz showed that only the green parts of a plant do this, and only in light. Melvin Calvin traced the path of carbon through algae with radioactive carbon in the 1950s and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1961.
