Constellations Word Search
This constellations word search holds forty patterns and stars of the night sky: Orion and Cassiopeia, the Big Dipper inside Ursa Major, the zodiac signs Leo, Taurus and Gemini, and the bright stars Sirius, Polaris and Betelgeuse.
Astronomers recognize 88 constellations, with borders agreed by the International Astronomical Union in the late 1920s. Forty-eight of them were already listed by Ptolemy in the second century. The Big Dipper is not one of the 88. It is an asterism, a familiar shape of seven stars inside the Great Bear, and the two stars at the end of its bowl point straight to Polaris, the North Star.
Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, about 8.6 light years away. Betelgeuse is the red giant on Orion's shoulder, and Rigel is the blue-white star at his foot. The Summer Triangle joins three stars from three constellations: Vega in Lyra, Deneb in Cygnus and Altair in Aquila. The Pleiades, a tight cluster in Taurus, are called Subaru in Japan, and the carmaker of that name puts six of their stars on its badge.
