This respiratory system word search has forty words for the breathing unit: the trachea, bronchus and bronchioles, the alveoli where gases trade places, the diaphragm, the larynx and epiglottis, the cilia and mucus that clean the air, and the hiccup.

Air comes in through the nose, where hairs and sticky mucus trap dust, and passes the pharynx and the larynx, the voice box that holds the vocal cords. When you swallow, a flap called the epiglottis folds over the opening so food goes down the esophagus and not the windpipe. The trachea splits into two bronchi, which branch again and again into bronchioles and end in hundreds of millions of tiny air sacs, the alveoli, where oxygen passes into the blood and carbon dioxide comes out.

The lungs have no muscle of their own. The diaphragm, a dome of muscle under them, contracts and flattens to draw air in and relaxes to let it out, helped by the intercostal muscles between the ribs. The right lung has three lobes and the left only two, leaving room for the heart. A hiccup is a sudden twitch of the diaphragm followed by the vocal cords snapping shut, which makes the hic.
