Cell Division Word Search

This cell division puzzle runs through both kinds, mitosis and meiosis, phase by phase: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and cytokinesis, with the chromosome and spindle that do the work.

In mitosis one cell copies its chromosomes and splits into two identical daughter cells, which is how a body grows and heals a cut. Meiosis divides twice and halves the count, turning a diploid cell into haploid gametes. Human body cells carry 46 chromosomes; an egg or sperm carries 23, and the zygote they form is back to 46. Crossing over during meiosis swaps pieces between paired chromosomes, so no two gametes are quite alike.

Walther Flemming named mitosis in 1882 after the Greek word for thread, because the stained chromosomes looked like threads under his microscope. A century later Tim Hunt found cyclins in sea urchin eggs, proteins that rise and fall to push a cell from one phase to the next. Checkpoints stop the cycle when DNA is damaged; when they fail, cells keep dividing, and the result can be a tumor.
