Archaeology Word Search

This archaeology word search holds forty words from the dig: the trowel, brush and sieve, the trench and the grid, the artifact and the potsherd, and famous finds from Pompeii to Tutankhamun and the Rosetta Stone.

Archaeologists read the ground like a book written from the bottom up. In stratigraphy, each layer of soil was laid down after the one below it, so deeper usually means older. That is why every find is recorded in place before it is lifted, with its spot on the grid and its depth in the trench. Dinosaurs belong to another science: fossil bones are studied by paleontologists, and archaeology deals with the human past.

Some of the best finds came by luck. Howard Carter opened the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings in November 1922, nearly untouched after more than 3,000 years. Four teenagers found the painted caves of Lascaux in France in 1940, and farmers digging a well near Xian in China in 1974 broke into the Terracotta Army. The Rosetta Stone, found in Egypt in 1799, carried one decree in three scripts, which let Jean-Francois Champollion read hieroglyphs in 1822.
