Anatomy Word Search

This anatomy word search has forty words for the language of the body: anterior and posterior, superior and inferior, medial, lateral, proximal and distal, the sagittal plane, and the dissection that the science started with.

Anatomy comes from a Greek word meaning to cut up, and its terms all assume one pose, the anatomical position: standing straight, facing forward, arms at the sides and palms turned to the front. From there, anterior means toward the front and posterior toward the back, superior above and inferior below. Medial is toward the midline and lateral away from it. Proximal and distal are for limbs: the elbow is proximal to the wrist because it sits closer to the shoulder.

For more than a thousand years European doctors learned from the Greek physician Galen, who had dissected apes and pigs, not people. In 1543 Andreas Vesalius, a young professor at Padua, published On the Fabric of the Human Body, built on his own dissections, and corrected many of Galen's errors. In London in 1858 Henry Gray published the textbook still known as Gray's Anatomy, with drawings by his colleague Henry Vandyke Carter.
