Types of Government Word Search
Forty words for the ways people are governed: democracy and monarchy, oligarchy and theocracy, dictatorship and anarchy, the republic and the federation, and the titles of those in charge, from sultan and tsar to prime minister.
Most of these names come from Greek. The ending -cracy is from kratos, power, so democracy is rule by the demos, the people, and plutocracy is rule by the wealthy. The ending -archy is from archein, to rule: monarchy is rule by one, oligarchy by a few, and anarchy by no one at all. Aristotle sorted governments the same way, by whether one, a few or many held power and whether they ruled for the common good.
Ancient Athens ran a direct democracy in the fifth century BC, in which adult male citizens voted in person in the Assembly; women, slaves and foreigners could not. Modern democracies mostly elect representatives instead. A federation such as the United States or Germany shares power between a national government and its states, while a unitary state such as France keeps most of it at the center. Vatican City is an absolute monarchy ruled by the Pope.
