Reconstruction Word Search
This Reconstruction word search covers the rebuilding of the South from 1865 to 1877: the Freedmen and their new schools, the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth amendments, the carpetbagger and the scalawag, the sharecropper, the Black Codes and the first Black senator, Hiram Revels.
Three amendments changed the Constitution in five years. The Thirteenth, ratified in 1865, ended slavery; the Fourteenth, in 1868, made everyone born in the country a citizen with equal protection of the laws; and the Fifteenth, in 1870, barred states from denying the vote because of race. The Freedmen's Bureau set up schools across the South, and colleges such as Howard and Fisk were founded in those years.
In 1868 the House impeached President Andrew Johnson, mostly for firing his secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, and the Senate fell one vote short of removing him. Hiram Revels of Mississippi took his seat in the Senate in 1870. Reconstruction ended with the disputed election of 1876: in the Compromise of 1877, Rutherford Hayes became president and federal troops were withdrawn from the South.
