No one has ever drilled through the crust. The Kola Superdeep Borehole in northern Russia reached about 12 kilometers in 1989 and stopped there, while the distance to the center is about 6,371 kilometers. Everything below is known from seismic waves. In 1909 Andrija Mohorovicic noticed that waves sped up below a certain depth in Croatia, which marked the bottom of the crust. Beno Gutenberg found the edge of the core in 1913, and the Danish seismologist Inge Lehmann discovered the solid inner core in 1936.
The deeper you go, the hotter and denser it gets. The inner core is roughly as hot as the surface of the Sun, yet it stays solid because the pressure is so great. The outer core is liquid metal, and its churning makes the magnetic field that turns a compass needle. The mantle is solid rock, but it flows very slowly, a few centimeters a year, and drags the plates along with it.
