Water Cycle Word Search
This water cycle word search follows a drop of water the whole way round: evaporation from the sea, transpiration from plant leaves, condensation into clouds, precipitation as rain or snow, and collection in lakes, rivers and groundwater before the trip starts again.
The Sun drives the cycle and gravity brings the water back down. About 97 percent of the water on Earth is salt water in the ocean. Of the small share that is fresh, roughly two thirds is frozen in ice caps and glaciers, and most of the rest is underground, which leaves very little in the lakes and rivers we can see. A water molecule that evaporates spends only about nine days in the air, on average, before it falls again.
Some steps skip a stage. Sublimation turns ice straight into vapor without melting, which is how snow on a high mountain can shrink on a dry, windy day below freezing. Underground, water soaks into the soil by infiltration and sinks further by percolation until it reaches the water table. The Ogallala Aquifer under the Great Plains holds water that seeped in over thousands of years, and it lies beneath parts of eight states.
