Preschool Word Searches

First puzzles for three and four year olds, solved next to a grown-up who reads the words aloud. Colors, Shapes and Numbers come from the circle-time routine; 3 Letter Words are the first ones a child can spell out; Family and Body Parts are about the child; Pets, Farm Animals and Baby Animals are the animals in every picture book; the Weather is the one the class checks out the window each morning.

Children usually learn the letters of their own first name before the rest of the alphabet. Rebecca Treiman and Vivian Broderick documented this in a 1998 study of young children, and it gives a preschooler a way in: the letters of their name are the ones they spot first in a grid.
