Fossils Word Search

This fossils word search has 40 words for life turned to stone: the mold, the cast, the imprint and the petrified log, insects caught in amber, the ammonite, the trilobite and the mammoth, and the paleontologist who digs them out.

Mary Anning grew up poor in Lyme Regis on the south coast of England and sold fossils from the crumbling cliffs to visitors. As a girl, with her brother Joseph, she found the first ichthyosaur skeleton to be correctly identified, and in 1823 she found the first nearly complete plesiosaur. The scientists of her day used her finds in their papers, often without her name.

Fossils form in more than one way. Bones can be replaced by minerals until they are stone; a shell can dissolve and leave a mold that later fills to make a cast. Some places keep far more. The La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles trapped mammoths, dire wolves and saber-toothed cats in sticky asphalt, and the Burgess Shale in the Canadian Rockies, found by Charles Walcott in 1909, saved the soft bodies of sea animals more than 500 million years old. Coprolites are fossil droppings, and they show what ancient animals ate.
