Soil Word Search
This soil word search digs through 40 words: the topsoil, subsoil and bedrock of a soil profile, the sand, silt and clay that give it its texture, and the humus, the fungi and the earthworm that keep it alive.
Soil scientists sort the three mineral grains by size. Sand is the largest and feels gritty, silt is smooth like flour, and clay is so fine that a grain is under two thousandths of a millimeter and turns sticky when wet. Loam, the soil gardeners want, is a mix of about forty percent sand, forty percent silt and twenty percent clay. Dig a pit and you see the layers, called horizons: dark organic matter on top, then topsoil, subsoil, broken parent rock and finally solid bedrock. It can take several hundred years to build an inch of topsoil.
Charles Darwin's last book, in 1881, was about earthworms and how they turn and mix the ground. The loss of soil got its hardest lesson in the 1930s, when farmers had plowed up the grass of the Great Plains and a long drought let the wind carry the topsoil away in the Dust Bowl. Congress set up the Soil Conservation Service in 1935, and contour plowing and windbreaks spread across the plains.
