Rocks and Minerals Word Search
This rocks and minerals word search has the three rock families, igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic, with examples like granite, obsidian and marble, and the ten minerals of the Mohs scale from talc to diamond, along with luster and streak.
Friedrich Mohs, a German mineralogist, set up his scale in 1812 by testing which mineral scratches which. Talc is 1, then gypsum, calcite, fluorite, apatite, orthoclase, quartz, topaz and corundum, with diamond at 10. A fingernail scores about 2.5 and a steel knife about 5.5, so a quick scratch test sorts most samples. The steps are not even: diamond is several times harder than corundum, the mineral just below it.
The rock cycle links the three families. Igneous rock forms when magma or lava cools; weather breaks it into sediment, which is pressed and cemented into sedimentary rock; heat and pressure turn either kind into metamorphic rock, so limestone becomes marble and shale becomes slate. Pumice is igneous rock so full of gas bubbles that it floats. Pyrite, fool's gold, gives itself away on a streak plate, where it leaves a greenish black line while real gold leaves a yellow one.
