Rainforest Word Search
The grid works through the rainforest from the ground up - the understory, the canopy and the emergent layer above it - and fills in what grows there: lianas, epiphytes, bromeliads, ferns, moss and orchids.
Rainforests cover about six percent of the land and hold more than half the species on earth. The soil under them is surprisingly poor: almost all the nutrients are locked in the living plants, recycled within inches of the surface, which is why cleared rainforest farms badly after a couple of seasons.
The layers are a light problem. So little reaches the forest floor that plants climb or perch instead: lianas root in the ground and climb toward the canopy, epiphytes like orchids and bromeliads skip the ground entirely and live on branches, taking water from the air.
