The meal the holiday looks back to, the 1621 harvest feast at Plymouth, lasted three days and was shared with about ninety Wampanoag men. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863, when Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of thanks for the last Thursday of November. In 1941 Congress fixed it on the fourth Thursday, which is why the date moves between November 22 and 28.
