The meal remembered at Thanksgiving took place in 1621 at Plymouth, where about fifty English colonists and some ninety Wampanoag men under their leader Massasoit ate together for three days. There was probably no pumpkin pie, since the colonists had no oven to bake one; deer and wild fowl were on the table. Lincoln made the holiday national in 1863, and Congress fixed it to the fourth Thursday in 1941.
November is also Native American Heritage Month. Veterans Day on the 11th is the date the First World War ended in 1918, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Election Day falls on the Tuesday after the first Monday. Congress chose that date in 1845 so farmers could reach the county seat without traveling on Sunday or missing market day.
