Black Friday Word Search
This Black Friday puzzle holds forty words from the shopping day after Thanksgiving: the doorbuster and the coupon, the bargain, the crowds, the checkout, the receipt, the early bird, the cashier and the Cyber Monday that follows.
The name comes from Philadelphia. In the 1950s and 1960s, city police used Black Friday for the jammed streets and packed stores on the day after Thanksgiving, when holiday shoppers and visitors in town for the Army and Navy football game on Saturday filled downtown. Merchants tried to rename it Big Friday in 1961, without success. The story that the day puts stores in the black, meaning into profit, came later, in the 1980s.
The date of Thanksgiving itself has been tied to shopping. In 1939 Franklin Roosevelt moved the holiday a week earlier to give stores a longer Christmas season, and in 1941 Congress set it on the fourth Thursday of November. A rain check began as a ticket stub for a baseball game called off by rain, and stores borrowed it for a sale item that runs out. Cyber Monday was named in 2005 by Shop.org, part of the National Retail Federation, for the online sales that follow the weekend.
