Harvest Word Search
Forty words for bringing the crop in, from the sickle and the scythe to the combine, which does the whole job in one pass: it cuts the wheat, threshes out the grain and blows the chaff away. The first one was built in Michigan in the 1830s and pulled by a team of horses.
Gleaning is going back over a field for whatever the harvest missed, and for centuries it was a legal right for the poor across much of Europe. The granary takes its name from granum, the same Latin word that gave English grain.
The cornucopia, the horn of plenty on a Thanksgiving table, comes from Greek myth: a horn of the goat that nursed the infant Zeus, which filled with whatever its owner wished for. A bushel is a measure of volume, not weight, about 35 liters of apples or grain.
