The first transcontinental railroad was finished on May 10, 1869, when the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific met at Promontory Summit in Utah and a last spike of gold was tapped into place. A trip from New York to San Francisco that had taken months by wagon, or by ship around South America, now took about a week.
