This Vietnam War word search covers the war from the Gulf of Tonkin to the fall of Saigon: the Viet Cong and Ho Chi Minh, the helicopter soldiers called a Huey, the Tet Offensive, the draft and the protest marches at home, and the black granite wall designed by Maya Lin.
After reports of attacks on American destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin in August 1964, Congress gave President Lyndon Johnson broad power to use force, and by 1968 more than 500,000 American troops were in Vietnam. The Tet Offensive that January, launched during the lunar new year holiday, was a military defeat for the North but shocked Americans who had been told the war was nearly won.
Walter Cronkite told his CBS audience in February 1968 that the war seemed headed for a stalemate. At Kent State University in Ohio, National Guard soldiers shot and killed four students at a protest in May 1970. The Paris Peace Accords of 1973 took American combat troops out, and North Vietnamese tanks entered Saigon on April 30, 1975. Maya Lin was a 21-year-old Yale student when her design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was chosen in 1981.
