World War 2 Word Search

This World War 2 word search holds forty words from 1939 to 1945: the Allies and the Axis, Churchill and Roosevelt, Pearl Harbor, D Day on the beaches of Normandy, the Code Talkers, and the Victory Garden at home.

The war in Europe began on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland; Britain and France declared war two days later. The United States stayed out until December 7, 1941, when Japanese planes attacked the American fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. On June 6, 1944, about 156,000 Allied troops crossed the English Channel and landed in Normandy, the largest seaborne invasion in history, under the command of Dwight Eisenhower.

At Bletchley Park in England, codebreakers including Alan Turing read messages sent on the German Enigma machine. In the Pacific, Navajo Code Talkers sent Marine Corps radio messages in their own language, a code the Japanese never broke. The war in Europe ended in May 1945, and Japan surrendered in August, after atomic bombs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
