Civil Rights Movement Word Search
This Civil Rights Movement word search covers the struggle against segregation in the 1950s and 1960s: Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott, the sit in at a Greensboro lunch counter, the Freedom Riders, the march from Selma, and leaders such as John Lewis and Dr King.
The legal turning point came in 1954, when the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that separate public schools for Black and white children could never be equal. Thurgood Marshall argued the case for the NAACP. In 1957 nine Black students needed federal troops to enter Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, and in 1960 six-year-old Ruby Bridges integrated a New Orleans elementary school.
Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat on December 1, 1955, and the boycott that followed lasted 381 days. The March on Washington in August 1963 drew about 250,000 people to the Lincoln Memorial. After state troopers beat marchers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma in March 1965, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act that summer.
