Black History Month Word Search

This Black History Month word search holds forty names and words from the February observance: Tubman, Douglass, Bethune, Carver, Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall and Ruby Bridges, along with freedom, justice and the boycott that changed Montgomery.

The month grew out of Negro History Week, which the historian Carter G. Woodson launched in February 1926. He chose the week holding the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, which Black communities already celebrated. Schools and churches took it up quickly, and in 1976 President Gerald Ford recognized the whole month.

In 1955 the arrest of Rosa Parks started the Montgomery bus boycott, which lasted 381 days and ended after the Supreme Court ruled bus segregation unconstitutional. Ten years later the march from Selma to Montgomery pushed Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges walked past shouting crowds into William Frantz Elementary in New Orleans, the first Black child at the school.
