Cold War Word Search
This Cold War word search covers the long standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union from 1947 to 1991: the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall, NATO and the Warsaw Pact, the arms race, the KGB and the CIA, Khrushchev and Gorbachev.
Winston Churchill gave the Iron Curtain its name in a speech at Fulton, Missouri, in March 1946. When the Soviets blockaded West Berlin in 1948, American and British planes flew in food and coal for nearly a year in the Berlin Airlift. The two sides never fought each other directly. They fought through proxy wars in Korea and Vietnam and through an arms race that left each with thousands of nuclear warheads.
The closest call came in October 1962, when American spy planes found Soviet missiles in Cuba, about 90 miles from Florida. For thirteen days Kennedy and Khrushchev bargained before the missiles were withdrawn, and a hotline between Washington and Moscow was set up the next year. The Berlin Wall, built in 1961, fell on November 9, 1989, and the Soviet Union broke up two years later.
