Gilded Age Word Search
This Gilded Age word search covers the years after the Civil War when America grew rich and crowded at once: Carnegie and Rockefeller, the robber barons, a Vanderbilt mansion at Newport, the city tenement, Boss Tweed of Tammany Hall, Edison and the light bulb.
Mark Twain named the era in The Gilded Age, a novel he wrote with Charles Dudley Warner in 1873. Gilded means covered with a thin layer of gold, and the joke was that a shiny surface hid cheaper metal underneath. Andrew Carnegie built a steel empire in Pittsburgh, John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil came to refine about nine tenths of the oil in the country, and J. P. Morgan financed railroads and banks.
Below them, millions lived in crowded tenements, and Jacob Riis photographed those rooms for his 1890 book How the Other Half Lives. The cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Boss Tweed so often that Tweed, after escaping from jail, was recognized from one of the drawings and arrested in Spain in 1876. Carnegie later gave most of his fortune away, paying for more than 2,500 public libraries.
