Great Depression Word Search
This Great Depression word search covers the hard years from 1929 to the start of the Second World War: the crash on Black Tuesday, the breadline and the soup kitchen, the Hooverville, the Dust Bowl and the Okies, and Roosevelt and his New Deal.
Stock prices fell hard in late October 1929, and on Black Tuesday, October 29, more than 16 million shares were sold in a single day. Thousands of banks failed over the next few years, taking people's savings with them, and by 1933 about a quarter of American workers had no job. The shanty towns that grew on empty lots were called Hoovervilles, after President Herbert Hoover.
Franklin Roosevelt took office in March 1933, closed the banks for a bank holiday, and explained his plans to the country in radio talks known as fireside chats. The Civilian Conservation Corps put young men to work planting trees and building parks, and the Social Security Act followed in 1935. On the southern plains, drought and dust storms drove families west to California, the story John Steinbeck told in The Grapes of Wrath in 1939.
