Handwashing as medicine is younger than it sounds. In 1847 Ignaz Semmelweis, a doctor in Vienna, had the staff of his maternity ward wash their hands in a chlorine solution, and deaths from childbed fever fell sharply; many of his colleagues still refused to accept it.
