This hygiene word search covers keeping yourself clean from head to toe: soap worked into a lather, a good scrub, shampoo and a comb, deodorant for sweat, clean socks from the laundry, and a tissue or your sleeve for a cough.
Handwashing has a rule of thumb. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tells people to scrub for at least 20 seconds, about the time it takes to hum Happy Birthday twice, because soap needs that long to loosen oil and lift microbes off the skin so the water can rinse them away. The backs of the hands, between the fingers and under the nails are the spots people miss most.
Fresh sweat has almost no smell. Body odor comes from bacteria on the skin breaking sweat down, mostly under the arms, where a second kind of sweat gland switches on at puberty. That is why a deodorant and an antiperspirant are different products: a deodorant covers the smell and slows the bacteria, while an antiperspirant uses aluminum salts to plug the sweat ducts for a while. The first trademarked deodorant, called Mum, went on sale in Philadelphia in 1888.
