First Aid Word Search
This first aid word search holds what goes in the kit and what to do with it: bandage and gauze, a splint and a sling, an ice pack for a sprain, chest compressions, the Heimlich move for choking, and the Red Cross, which has taught first aid classes for more than a century.
The Red Cross started on a battlefield. In 1859 a Swiss businessman named Henri Dunant passed through Solferino in northern Italy the day after a battle and found thousands of wounded soldiers left with almost no care. He organized local villagers to help, wrote a book about it, and in 1863 helped found the committee in Geneva that became the International Red Cross. Clara Barton, who had nursed soldiers in the American Civil War, founded the American Red Cross in 1881.
The Heimlich maneuver is newer than most people guess. The surgeon Henry Heimlich published it in June 1974, after reading that choking killed thousands of Americans each year, and within weeks newspapers reported it had saved a life. The rule for most cuts is much older and simpler: press firmly on the wound with clean gauze, keep pressing, and raise the injured part above the heart if you can.
