Health Careers Word Search

This health careers word search holds the jobs that keep people well: the physician and the surgeon, the midwife, the pharmacist, the dental hygienist, the phlebotomist who draws blood and the sonographer who runs the ultrasound machine.

Many of the job names explain themselves once you know the Greek. A phlebotomist takes its name from the words for vein and cutting. An audiologist studies hearing, a podiatrist treats the foot, and an oncologist treats tumors. Midwife is plain Old English: mid meant with and wif meant woman, so a midwife is the one who stays with the woman giving birth.

The training paths differ a great deal. A doctor finishes four years of medical school and then a residency of three to seven years. Pharmacists in the United States now earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Dental hygiene began in 1913, when Alfred Fones, a dentist in Bridgeport, Connecticut, opened a school to train women to clean teeth and teach children to brush.
