Enrique Camarena grew up in Calexico, California, served as a Marine and a police officer, and joined the Drug Enforcement Administration in 1974. Working undercover in Guadalajara, Mexico, he helped expose a huge marijuana operation, and in February 1985 he was kidnapped in daylight outside the American consulate there and killed. He was 37. Back home, friends and neighbors in Calexico began wearing red ribbons in his memory.
Parents' groups picked up the ribbon, and in 1988 the National Family Partnership held the first nationwide Red Ribbon Week, with Nancy and Ronald Reagan as honorary chairs and a proclamation from Congress. It is now one of the largest drug prevention campaigns in the country. Many schools run it as a spirit week, with a different theme each day, and Camarena's own line is often printed on the banners: I'm only one person, but I want to make a difference.
