Safety Word Search
This safety word search covers staying safe at home, on the road and in the water: the seat belt and car seat, a bike helmet, the crosswalk and traffic light, a life jacket, a lifeguard, and the poison sticker called Mr Yuk.
The modern seat belt came from a Swedish engineer. Nils Bohlin, who had designed ejection seats for fighter jets, joined Volvo and in 1959 gave it the three-point belt, one strap across the lap and one across the chest, buckled with one hand at the hip. Volvo patented the design and then let every carmaker use it for free, and Volvo estimates it has saved more than a million lives since.
Mr Yuk was invented in 1971 at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Doctors there noticed that the old skull and crossbones did not scare local children at all, because in Pittsburgh it meant the baseball team, the Pirates. They tested faces on young kids, and a scowling green face with its tongue out was the one children agreed looked yucky. The traffic light has its own inventor story: in 1923 Garrett Morgan patented a signal with a third position that stopped traffic in every direction, an early version of today's yellow light.
