Mindfulness Word Search

This mindfulness word search is about paying attention on purpose: the breath as an anchor, the five senses, the body scan, stillness and silence, a single raisin eaten slowly, and the habit of noticing thoughts drift past like clouds.

The idea is old. The Pali word sati, from early Buddhist teaching, means something close to remembering to be aware, and the British scholar Thomas Rhys Davids chose the English word mindfulness to translate it in 1881. For most of the next century it stayed a word for monks and students of religion.

Jon Kabat-Zinn brought it into hospitals. In 1979 he started an eight-week course at the University of Massachusetts Medical School for patients with chronic pain, later called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. One of its first exercises is the raisin: students look at it, smell it and roll it on the tongue for several minutes before they chew. Another is the body scan, where attention moves slowly from the toes to the top of the head.
