Valentine's Day became a day for cards in Britain in 1840, when the Penny Post let anyone send a letter anywhere in the country for one penny, paid by the sender, and the number of valentines in the mail jumped the next February. Before that, the person who received a letter usually paid for it, which made an anonymous valentine an awkward gift.
