The oldest valentine still around was written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, a prisoner in the Tower of London after the battle of Agincourt, to his wife in France; the poem is in the British Library. The rhyme on so many cards took longer. Edmund Spenser wrote of roses red and violets blue in 1590, and a book of nursery rhymes printed in 1784 had the version most people know: the rose is red, the violet blue, the honey sweet, and so are you.
In America, valentines became a business in the 1840s, when Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, began making lace and paper cards with a team of women working from her home. The finest sold for as much as $35. The cheap side of the trade was the vinegar valentine, a printed card that insulted the person who got it, mailed without a name.
