On the second morning of the month a crowd gathers in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to see whether a groundhog named Phil finds his shadow. If he does, six more weeks of winter; if not, an early spring. The ceremony has run since 1887, and Phil has called it right about four times in ten.
February is also Black History Month. It began in 1926 as a single week, picked by the historian Carter G. Woodson because it held the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, and it grew to the whole month in 1976. Harriet Tubman is here, and so is Rosa Parks, born on February 4. The toothbrush is on the list because this is Children's Dental Health Month. And every fourth year the month gains a day, the leap year that keeps the calendar in step with the sun.
